How to distinguish rivets from willow nail products?

Jul 07,2025

Rivet is a mechanical fastener used to connect two or more workpieces together. Unlike fasteners such as nails and screws, rivets are used to permanently fix workpieces.

How to distinguish between the two types of rivets? The difference between willow nails and rivets is that one is next to wooden characters, and the other is next to golden characters. The two are the same thing, rivets are misunderstood as willow nails.

Rivet is a mechanical fastener used to connect two or more workpieces together. Unlike fasteners such as nails and screws, rivets are used to permanently fix workpieces. After the workpiece is fixed, it is necessary to break the rivet or workpiece in order to separate the fixed workpiece. The method of fixing or joining workpieces with rivets is called "riveting". Rivets can be seen as hemispherical screws without threads.

When the willow nail is not installed, it is a cylindrical shape with a protrusion at one end. When fixing, rivets that are longer than the workpiece will be used. The tail of the rivet will be inserted into the pre processed hole of the workpiece. Due to the long length of the rivet, the tail will protrude from the workpiece by a small amount. Finally, a tool will be used to hammer the protruding part of the tail flat, which will expand to about 1.5 times the original diameter of the rivet. At this time, both sides of the rivet have protruding heads, which can fix the workpiece

After the rivet is fixed, there are raised parts on both sides, so it can withstand tension loads parallel to the rivet. However, screws and bolts are more suitable for use in situations with tension loads, and rivets are more suitable for withstanding shear loads perpendicular to them.

Commonly used rivets include semi-circular head, flat head, countersunk head rivets, pop rivets, and hollow rivets, which are usually connected to the riveted parts using their own deformation. (Generally, cold riveting is used for sizes smaller than 8mm, and hot riveting is used for sizes larger than 8mm.) However, there are exceptions, such as the nameplate on a three ring lock, which is riveted using the interference fit between the rivet and the lock body hole.

There is also a special feature for inserting rivets. Divided into two parts, the thicker section of the capped rod has a hole in the center, which is an interference fit with the thinner section of the capped rod. When riveting, simply drive the thin rod into the thick rod. Rivets can be seen as hemispherical screws without threads. The materials of willow nails mainly include aluminum, iron, stainless steel, copper, and Monel/iron
