Basic knowledge of rivets

Jul 07,2025

Half round head rivets are mainly used in riveting situations with large lateral loads and are the most widely used.

There are many types of rivets, and they are not limited in form.

Commonly used rivets include semi-circular head, flat head, countersunk head rivets, pop rivets, and hollow rivets, which are usually connected to the riveted parts using their own deformation. (Generally, cold riveting is used for sizes smaller than 8mm, and hot riveting is used for sizes larger than 8mm.) However, there are exceptions, such as the nameplate on a three ring lock, which is riveted using the interference fit between the rivet and the lock body hole.

In addition, there are also special rivets for insertion. Divided into two parts, the thicker section of the capped rod has a hole in the center, which is an interference fit with the thinner section of the capped rod. When riveting, simply drive the thin rod into the thick rod.

Purpose of rivets

Half round head rivets are mainly used in riveting situations with large lateral loads and are the most widely used.

Flat cone head rivets are commonly used in highly corrosive riveting applications such as ship hulls and boiler water tanks due to their enlarged head and corrosion resistance.

Countersunk and 1200 countersunk rivets are mainly used in riveting situations where the surface needs to be smooth and the load is not significant.

Semi countersunk head and 1200 semi countersunk head rivets are mainly used in riveting situations where the surface needs to be smooth and the load is not large.

Flat head rivets are used in riveting applications with general loads.

Flat head and flat round head rivets are mainly used for riveting non-metallic materials such as metal sheets, leather, canvas, and wood.

Large flat head rivets are mainly used for riveting non-metallic materials.

Half hollow rivets are mainly used in riveting situations where the load is not large.

Headless rivets are mainly used for riveting non-metallic materials.

Hollow rivets are lightweight and have weak heads, suitable for riveting non-metallic materials with small loads.

Tubular rivets are used in non-metallic materials for non load dependent riveting applications.

Label rivets are mainly used for riveting nameplates on machines, equipment, etc.

Blind rivets are a type of rivet used for single-sided riveting, but require the use of a specialized tool - a rivet gun (manual, electric, or movable) for riveting. This type of rivet is particularly suitable for riveting situations where it is inconvenient to use ordinary rivets (which require riveting from both sides), so it is widely used in products such as construction, automobiles, ships, airplanes, machinery, electrical appliances, furniture, etc. Among them, open flat round head pop rivets are the most widely used, countersunk pop rivets are suitable for riveting applications that require smoothness, and closed pop rivets are suitable for riveting applications that require higher loads and certain sealing performance.
